It has only been some years, that highlights like the Purnululu - Bungle Bungle National Park have been made accessible for the modern traveler. The magnificent Kimberleys and the Hamersly Ranges National Park are still waiting to be discovered by the tourist industry. The beautiful beaches in Broome are only known to the locals. The "Best of the West" covers all the prime destinations of Western Australia, without turning into an expedition.
The tour stretches 4.900 km, including 300 km gravel road, which is easily done by the average experienced motorbike rider.
We start the tour in tropical Darwin, one of the best places to tune yourself into holiday mood. We do some sightseeing of the city, watch the crocodiles, or just enjoy one of the beaches around. After visiting the Northern Territory Wildlife Park, our first camp will be in Litchfield National Park at Wangi Falls. The next night will see us at Nitmiluk - Katherine Gorge National Park, at Edith Falls. We enjoy the tropics at their best. After that, we head straight west and cross the border to Western Australia.
After a bush camp we reach Kununurra. We relax a day, organise a boat trip on the Ord River and a scenic flight over Purnululu. On our way to the coast we travel through the southern part of the Kimberleys, with the magnificent National Parks of Geikie Gorge, Tunnel Creek and Windjana Gorge. We spend a day in Broome at Cable Beach, a small village, that used to live from diving for pearls.
We follow the coast and turn inland just north of Port Headland, to enter the real outback. We visit the Hamersley Ranges National Park, a number of beautiful gorges with idyllic billabongs and waterfalls. In Kalgoorlie we get a bit of a taste of the goldrush days in the old "Wild West". The mines are still working and it is said, that in some pubs you can still pay your bill in nuggets. On our last leg to Perth we pass Wave Rock, an unusually shaped rock formation. Perth, nestled between the Swan River and the Indian Ocean, is our final destination of the trip. We party in Fremantle, to celebrate an exciting and rewarding tour: "The Best of the West."
